The map was beautifully drawn by John Scott, who saw Humphrey Chabourne's manor house in its glory and placed it on the map in exactly the spot where it is now being unearthed. See http://www.salem.mass.edu/~ebaker/chadbourne.htm for details of the excavation.
The map shows the location of every mill in the Portsmouth, York, Kittery, Eliot, So. Berwick, Dover, and Exeter areas, plus the location of forts and Indian villages. It also includes Strawbery Banke and its Great House, as well as many other important features.
The map has many other interesting features, including a dedication poem to James Duke of York, who later became King James II and who tried to restore Roman Catholicism to Britain until he was defeated by William of Orange at the Battle of the Boyne in Northern Ireland in 1690. The annual celebration of that victory by "The Orangemen" through catholic Belfast has been a major irritant to protestant-catholic relations in Northern Ireland ever since. The Chadbourne Family Association has purchased the right to reproduce the map and has made several fine photographic prints.
