The YWCA is one of the oldest and largest organizations in the world run by women, for women and their families. Founded in 1869, the YWCA of Greater Portland has played an important role in that tradition, helping to build a stronger, healthier and more diverse and welcoming community right here in Maine.

1869 • YWCA founded in Portland
1873 • Purchased first boarding house for women
1906 • Advocated for child labor laws
1915 • Supported women’s suffrage movement
1929 • Unanimous support for Community Chest
       (forerunner of United Way)
1938 • Spoke out about persecution of Jews in Germany
1940 • Advocated for black rights
1962 • Dedicated site at 87 Spring Street
1966 • First pool for women and girls in Maine
1970s • Expanded women’s counseling services
1990s • Founded Street Program for teens
2003 • Community rallies to save YWCA
2004 • Opened Wellness Center
