YPP featured in Local Magazine

The YWCA's Young Parent Program is highlighted in the March/April issue of Port/City Life magazine. In an article called "Grassroots Giving", Donna Gaspar Jarvis names three unique programs in the greater Portland area that "explore the root causes of certain social issues and seek creative ways to combat them."

Among them is the Young Women's Self Defense Program: Prevention, Action, and Change. The program is the brainchild of founder Clara Porter and reaches out to young women ages 16-25 who are homeless or formerly homeless. A free ten week self-defense class is offered through the YWCA's Young Parent Program. The group meets weekly to work on self-defense skills. Thus far about 30 participants have gone through the program. Check out the latest issue of Port City Life for more information.

Dress for Success visits ACES Program

Dress for Success, a non-profit organization dedicated to preparing women for job opportunities through donations of workplace appropriate clothing, made a visit to the YWCA of Greater Portland's ACES (Adult Community Educational Services) Program on February 1, 2006. The event was a success with the help of Talbots, Inc., which gave a large donation of clothing to be distributed among the 10 participants.
The ACES Program offers structured, organized educational opportunities to women residents of the YWCA as well as residents of the greater Portland community.
